Cyrus Art Production presents an integrated evening of dance, music, spoken word, and art!
Audience members will be able to mix and mingle with a range of artistic disciplines while celebrating the talent of the Creative Class of the Triad area.
Cyrus Art Production performers will dance excerpts of Duane Cyrus's choreography while artists from other disciplines (spoken word, music, graphic art) also interact with audience and perform!

Dance Gala Greensboro: The Vital Grace Project will feature a roster of special guest performers including, Lloyd Knight and Masha Maddux, soloists with the Martha Graham Dance Company, Ben Ingel from The North Carolina Dance Theatre 2, and Aran Bell, the ballet prodigy featured in the documentary film, First Position (for more info visit: http://www.balletdocumentary.com/). Duane Cyrus will also premiere new work with professional artists and students from UNCG.

The theme of Dance Gala Greensboro: The Vital Grace Project is men in dance, featuring performances and works by male dance artists who defy the old adage that dance is "something men don't do" as they perform with grace and athleticism!

Dance Gala Greensboro: The Vital Grace Project is one of several events that represent a sustained goal of building inclusive communities, presenting high-profile professional performing artists, developing local artists, and establishing diverse programming within the Triad Community and beyond! Duane Cyrus has performed with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Martha Graham Dance Company, The Lion King (original London cast), Carousel (U.S. Tour) as well as directing domestic and international tours with Cyrus Art Production.

    Duane Cyrus presents Accessing the Theatre of Movement at the Hawaii International Conference on the Arts and Humanities in Honolulu. Accessing the Theatre of Movement explores the connectivity between the two disciplines of Dance and Theatre as a tool for developing awareness, clarity of communication, and physical presence. Accessing the Theatre of Movement investigates the theatrical power of movement and physical presence for the artist, performer of any discipline, public speaker, or anyone who regularly engages the public or needs to communicate effectively.

    Cyrus Art Production continues its commitment to high quality performing arts presentation in North Carolina, celebrating seven years of fresh, diverse, and exciting performances! Led by director and Associate Professor Duane Cyrus from the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance at UNCG, Duane Cyrus Dance represents a sustained goal of building inclusive communities, presenting high profile professional international artists, development of local artists, diverse programming, and top quality performance in the Triad community and beyond!

    This season’s program will feature choreographic works by Duane Cyrus and selected guests, with performances by Cyrus and company including the following scheduled repertory (subject to change):

    MIDDLE PASSAGE: Traveler Part I-IV a dance theatre work by Cyrus using dance, text, video, and song to reflect the life force and cultural vibrancy of people of African descent in America. This riveting performance delves into some of the ways that people of African descent have moved, migrated, or mobilized throughout American history. This work is inspired by the poetry of Louis Mustafa Audrey.

    Dreamplay by Christopher Huggins. This work is a quartet created by acclaimed choreographer and former Ailey dancer, Christopher Huggins.
    Also scheduled are new works by Cyrus, highlighting his signature interdisciplinary style that has amazed Triad audiences since the company’s North Carolina premiere in 2006.

    Cyrus Art Production comes to Triad Stage’s UpStage Cabaret! Using dance, text, video, and song MIDDLE PASSAGE: Traveler Part I-IV is a cabaret performance reflecting the life force and cultural vibrancy of people of African descent in America.         Duane Cyrus presents 2 works for the  UNCG Dance Department's Faculty Concert. An evening of dance works created by Dance Department faculty including Cyrus, Robin Gee, Larry Lavendar, Janet Lilly, and BJ Sullivan. Duane Cyrus will present Atmosphere for Missing You as well as an all new reworking of Location of Spirit with live music and vocalists. Special guest artist James A Pierce III will perform. Pierce is currently performing on Broadway in Disney's The Lion King.

        Guest Artist Noriko Hara Teaches
        Ballet Master Classes in Greensboro

        November 6 thru 11, 2011

        Noriko Hara (Hiroshima, Japan) has performed as a soloist with the Matsuyama Ballet Company (Tokyo), Chicago Civic Ballet, and as a guest artist with the Central Dance Center (Omaha, NB). In addition to her early training in Japan she has trained with David Howard (NY) and Roger Roger Tully (London).

        Noriko Hara has appeared in the feature film Ballet Russes where she was coached by Frederic Franklin. Ms. Hara is also the director of Noriko Hara Ballet School in Hiroshima which has run successfully for over 25 years training young people in classical as well as other dance forms. Several of her students have won prizes in competitions like Youth America Grand Prix.

        Ms. Hara collaborates regularly with Daniel Baudendistel (American Ballet Theatre, Joffery Ballet) as an assistant choreographer. She has taught and coached dancers at ABT Summer Intensive (1997-2003), and Studio Maestro (NY). Ms. Hara has worked as an assistant to Duane Cyrus for several projects including the ballets "Mother" and "Untitled" in Japan and "Venus" for the Joffrey/New School program in New York. Ms. Hara also works as costume designer for several prominent dance artists and organizations including the Gelsey Kirkland Academy of Classical Ballet.

        Vital Grace: Moving Images is an interdisciplinary exhibit that highlights the beauty and passion of the dancing body. Using images from Cyrus’s performance works and creative collaborations including Vital Grace: the Black Male Dancer co-authored by Cyrus and award winning New York based photographer Joanne Savio. This unique exhibit will provide an up close perspective on dance performance with photographic work and video installations by other local artists.

        Opening Night Reception: November 4th from 6-9 pm (will include live performances from Cyrus Art Production)

      The Access to Art Academy Fall 2010 Workshop is a FIVE-week professional development workshop providing performing arts professionals and pre-professionals the knowledge management and performance skills necessary to build and sustain their careers. Activities Include: Regular Technique classes; Professional Development seminars with area experts and special invited guests; Repertory Rehearsal to learn choreography by Duane Cyrus.

      Performance Opportunity!! As part of the professional experience, participants will have the chance to audition for a panel of judges to be selected to perform as extras in Cyrus Art Production’s Fall Season Concert at UNCG. October 21-23 immediately following this workshop.

      Featuring works by Duane Cyrus and guest artists Germaul Barnes, Juel Lane, and Christian von Howard

      Celebrating its fifth year of bringing fresh, diverse, exciting, and passionate performance to North Carolina, Cyrus Art Production premieres another top-notch season with an evening dedicated to the richness of the African-American experience and the myriad contributions made by people of color to American culture!

      Artistic Director Duane Cyrus will premiere a new work, Middle Passage Part I: Traveler, a performance work inspired by the poems of Louis Mustafa Audrey.

      This season’s special guest artists include:

      Germaul Barnes—Bessie Award winner and former member of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company will be joining the company for the second season after last year’s thrilling presentation of Half Full Manifest Destiny.

      Christian Von Howard—international performer, teacher, choreographer will be presenting Played OUT-a movement satire that speaks to the plight of social identity among African American men in today’s culture.

      Juel D. Lane—former member of Ronald K. Brown/Evidence Dance Company will return this season with a dance for the camera debut titled ...just another day.

      Cyrus Art Production Presents ACCESS TO ART ACADEMY SUMMER WORKSHOP 2010

      The Access to Art Academy Summer Workshop is a three-week workshop that will include an advanced company class followed by repertory rehearsals with Cyrus Art Production's artistic director Duane Cyrus. Participants will have the opportunity to advance their professional skills by working in a focused dance rehearsal environment. This workshop is being offered FREE OF CHARGE to a limited number of participants. Pre-professional experience and technical ability in ballet, jazz, and at least one modern/contemporary technique are required for dance artists ages 16 thru adult. Dancers interested in auditioning for Cyrus Art Production's future projects should attend this workshop!

      CHRISTOPHER L. HUGGINS is a former member of the renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. He has appeared as a guest artist for several dance companies in the United States an abroad. As a master teacher and choreographer, he works in Europe, Japan, Korea, and throughout the United States and has created ballets for numerous companies, including Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Ailey II, Philadanco, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Broadway Dance Center of Tokyo, and Oslo Dance Ensemble in Oslo, Norway. He is a 2002 and 2008 recipient of the Ira Aldridge Award for Best Choreography from the Black Theatre Alliance in Chicago for his work Enemy Behind the Gates and Pyrokinesis.
