Led by director and Associate Professor Duane Cyrus from the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance at UNCG, Duane Cyrus Dance represents a sustained goal of building inclusive communities, presenting high profile professional international artists, development of local artists, diverse programming, and top quality performance in the Triad community and beyond! This season’s program will feature choreographic works by Duane Cyrus and selected guests, with performances by Cyrus and company including the following scheduled repertory (subject to change): MIDDLE PASSAGE: Traveler Part I-IV a dance theatre work by Cyrus using dance, text, video, and song to reflect the life force and cultural vibrancy of people of African descent in America. This riveting performance delves into some of the ways that people of African descent have moved, migrated, or mobilized throughout American history. This work is inspired by the poetry of Louis Mustafa Audrey. Dreamplay by Christopher Huggins. This work is a quartet created by acclaimed choreographer and former Ailey dancer, Christopher Huggins. An evening of dance works created by Dance Department faculty including Cyrus, Robin Gee, Larry Lavendar, Janet Lilly, and BJ Sullivan. Duane Cyrus will present Atmosphere for Missing You as well as an all new reworking of Location of Spirit with live music and vocalists. Special guest artist James A Pierce III will perform. Pierce is currently performing on Broadway in Disney's The Lion King. $15 general admission; $12 seniors and children; $9 students Ballet Master Classes in Greensboro November 6 thru 11, 2011 Noriko Hara (Hiroshima, Japan) has performed as a soloist with the Matsuyama Ballet Company (Tokyo), Chicago Civic Ballet, and as a guest artist with the Central Dance Center (Omaha, NB). In addition to her early training in Japan she has trained with David Howard (NY) and Roger Roger Tully (London). Noriko Hara has appeared in the feature film Ballet Russes where she was coached by Frederic Franklin. Ms. Hara is also the director of Noriko Hara Ballet School in Hiroshima which has run successfully for over 25 years training young people in classical as well as other dance forms. Several of her students have won prizes in competitions like Youth America Grand Prix. Ms. Hara collaborates regularly with Daniel Baudendistel (American Ballet Theatre, Joffery Ballet) as an assistant choreographer. She has taught and coached dancers at ABT Summer Intensive (1997-2003), and Studio Maestro (NY). Ms. Hara has worked as an assistant to Duane Cyrus for several projects including the ballets "Mother" and "Untitled" in Japan and "Venus" for the Joffrey/New School program in New York. Ms. Hara also works as costume designer for several prominent dance artists and organizations including the Gelsey Kirkland Academy of Classical Ballet. FEATURED GUEST ARTIST: Camille A. Brown November 17 & 19 SAT October 16, 2010 from 1:00-3:00PM Duane Cyrus teaches Contemporary Dance Workshop in RICHMOND, VA Class Fee: $10. This master class is part of the RE-GENERATE: Bringing New Voices to New Audiences project. The RE-GENERATE performance will be held on October 15-16, 2010 at 8PM at the Grace Street Theater on the VCU Monroe Park Campus in Richmond. Proceeds from this master class help to ensure the continued growth and vitality of all programs surrounding this project – which includes the development of future outreach programs and educational series for dancers. SEPTEMBER 11 thru OCTOBER 16, 2010 Cyrus Art Production Presents ACCESS TO ART ACADEMY FALL WORKSHOP 2010 The Access to Art Academy Fall 2010 Workshop is a FIVE-week professional development workshop providing performing arts professionals and pre-professionals the knowledge management and performance skills necessary to build and sustain their careers.
Activities Include: Regular Technique classes; Professional Development seminars with area experts and special invited guests; Repertory Rehearsal to learn choreography by Duane Cyrus. As part of the professional experience, participants will have the chance to audition for a panel of judges to be selected to perform as extras in Cyrus Art Production’s Fall Season Concert at UNCG. MON-FRI JUNE 14 thru JULY 2, 2010 The Access to Art Academy Summer Workshop is a three-week workshop that will include an advanced company class followed by repertory rehearsals with Cyrus Art Production's artistic director Duane Cyrus. Participants will have the opportunity to advance their professional skills by working in a focused dance rehearsal environment.
This workshop is being offered FREE OF CHARGE to a limited number of participants. Pre-professional experience and technical ability in ballet, jazz, and at least one modern/contemporary technique are required for dance artists ages 16 thru adult. Dancers interested in auditioning for Cyrus Art Production's future projects should attend this workshop!
