Cyrus Art Production continues its commitment to high quality performing arts presentation in North Carolina, celebrating seven years of fresh, diverse, and exciting performances! Led by director and Associate Professor Duane Cyrus from the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance at UNCG, Duane Cyrus Dance represents a sustained goal of building inclusive communities, presenting high profile professional international artists, development of local artists, diverse programming, and top quality performance in the Triad community and beyond!

This season’s program will feature choreographic works by Duane Cyrus and selected guests, with performances by Cyrus and company including the following scheduled repertory (subject to change):

MIDDLE PASSAGE: Traveler Part I-IV a dance theatre work by Cyrus using dance, text, video, and song to reflect the life force and cultural vibrancy of people of African descent in America. This riveting performance delves into some of the ways that people of African descent have moved, migrated, or mobilized throughout American history. This work is inspired by the poetry of Louis Mustafa Audrey.

Dreamplay by Christopher Huggins. This work is a quartet created by acclaimed choreographer and former Ailey dancer Christopher Huggins.

Also scheduled are new works by Cyrus, highlighting his signature interdisciplinary style that has amazed Triad audiences since the company’s North Carolina premiere in 2006.

Duane Cyrus has performed with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Martha Graham Dance Company, The Lion King (original London cast), Carousel (U.S. Tour) as well as directing domestic and international tours with Cyrus Art Production.

Cyrus Art Production comes to Triad Stage’s UpStage Cabaret! Using dance, text, video, and song MIDDLE PASSAGE: Traveler Part I-IV is a cabaret performance reflecting the life force and cultural vibrancy of people of African descent in America. It delves into some of the ways that people of African descent have moved, migrated, or mobilized throughout American history. This work is inspired by the poetry of Louis Mustafa Audrey and is choreographed and directed by Duane Cyrus, artistic director of Cyrus Art Production and associate professor in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance at UNCG. The evening features pianist Gwendelyn Bell, poet D. Noble, and musical sensation Rahbi along with dancers from Cyrus Art Production and the UNCG School of Music Theatre & Dance. (performers are subject to change)

Travel and themes of location inform this inspiring and entertaining collection of dance and musical performances. Each section reflects a different location for black people in the Diaspora. The horrors of the Middle Passage; the location of spirit in gospel music; the place of love for black people; and the ability to move a country through civil protest and sitting in place at a lunch counter––are all part of this evening length work. This is an evening length work suitable for teen through adult audiences.

Cyrus Art Production continues its commitment to high quality performing arts presentation. Led by associate professor Duane Cyrus from the School of Music, Theatre and Dance at UNCG, The Vital Grace Project—2012 Showcase is an all-new lineup presented at the Greensboro Cultural Arts Center on Saturday, February 18th at 8 pm in the Music Hall. Reflecting Cyrus Art Production’s mission of building inclusive communities and supporting the development of young artists, this exciting performance comes to the Triad area for one night only! The Vital Grace Project—2012 Showcase is an unprecedented evening celebrating Black History Month and African American culture with a stellar lineup featuring some of America’s most successful music and dance artists!

The Vital Grace Project—2012 Showcase will feature tap sensation Maurice Chestnut who was recruited by tap master Savion Glover, to join the national touring company of the Tony Award winning Bring In ‘Da Noise, Bring In ‘Da Funk and continues to work with Glover on international and national tours. Chestnut’s high profile engagements have included the JVC Jazz Festival, the Playboy Jazz Festival, The Apollo Theater, and Birdland, as well as appearances at Carnegie Hall and throughout Europe.

Fascinating singer, Rahbi will return to Greensboro after wowing the audience in last year’s Vital Grace showcase! He has opened for Erykah Badu and is gaining attention for his unique vocal style. UNCG students will present workshop choreography by Jeffrey Page, an Emmy-nominated, and MTV’s 2011 Video Music Award winning choreographer. His works include MTV award winning choreography for Beyonce's riveting smash hit, Run The World (Girls) and choreography for the Fox hit series, So You Think You Can Dance. Page will appear at this event. Featured local performances include, Location of Spirit by Duane Cyrus, set to live vocal performance of traditional Spirituals and Gospel.

The Vital Grace Project brings in top-notch professional performing artists to mingle with Greensboro’s finest talent and includes performances and outreach programming activities throughout the year, made possible through support from the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro and The School of Music, Theatre and Dance at UNCG.

THE VITAL GRACE PROJECT: FALL 2011 Season at UNCG Dance Theatre

Celebrating its sixth year of bringing fresh, diverse, exciting, and passionate performance to North Carolina. Led by director and Associate Professor Duane Cyrus from the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance at UNCG, The Vital Grace Project—2011 Fall Season represents a sustained goal of building inclusive communities, presenting high profile professional international artists, development of local artists, diverse programming, and top quality performance in the Triad community and beyond!

This season’s program will present a roster of seasoned dance artists, including Duane Cyrus, who will return to the stage as a performer, accompanied by special guests Ursula Kendall-Johnson, an Atlanta-based diva and co-founder of 2Kids and A Dream Productions; Robin Gee, Associate Professor of Dance at UNC-Greensboro and director of Sugarfoote Productions; Kim Jones, former Martha Graham dancer and Assistant Professor at UNC-Charlotte; and Nina Lucas, Director of Dance and Associate Professor at Wake Forest University.

As a choreographer, Duane Cyrus will premiere two new duets, including a collaborative work performed by Cyrus and Jones. The two former Martha Graham dancers will dance to commissioned music by Richard Bennett. Also on the program is Cyrus’s haunting work Gotham, as well as a tribute to the Queen and Godfather of Soul, Aretha Franklin and James Brown. The Vital Grace Project—2011 Fall Season is sponsored in part by the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro’s 17 Days Festival. 17 Days is a unique collaborative celebration brought to you by the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro with Greensboro’s top artists, presenters, producing organizations, museums and venues.

Celebrating its fifth year of bringing fresh, diverse, exciting, and passionate performance to North Carolina, Cyrus Art Production premieres another top-notch season with an evening dedicated to the richness of the African-American experience and the myriad contributions made by people of color to American culture!

Artistic Director Duane Cyrus will premiere a new work, Middle Passage Part I: Traveler, a performance work inspired by the poems of Louis Mustafa Audrey.

This season’s special guest artists include:

Germaul Barnes—Bessie Award winner and former member of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company will be joining the company for the second season after last year’s thrilling presentation of Half Full Manifest Destiny.

Christian Von Howard—international performer, teacher, choreographer will be presenting Played OUT-a movement satire that speaks to the plight of social identity among African American men in today’s culture.

Juel D. Lane—former member of Ronald K. Brown/Evidence Dance Company will return this season with a dance for the camera debut titled Just Another Day.

Join former Martha Graham Principle dancer Elizabeth Auclair in a two-day introduction to the Graham Technique. Graham technique is considered one of the foundations of modern dance and its influence is still evident today. Understanding this technique is vital to an in-depth study of modern and contemporary dance

Elizabeth Auclair will be in Greensboro reconstructing Martha Graham's historic work "Steps in the Street" for the UNCG dance department. This reconstruction is made possible through a grant received from the National Endowment for the Arts. The work will be performed April 23 and 24, 2010 in the UNCG Dance Theatre

This workshop series was made possible through the generous support of City Arts Greensboro

"VITAL GRACE—The Black Male Dancer"

Cyrus Art Production celebrates its fourth season of bringing top quality dance to North Carolina with a concert celebrating Black Men in Dance!

Special guest performers include Germaul Barnes, a Bessie Award winner and former principle dancer with Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. Barnes will perform Half Full/Manifest Destiny a work about the Jenna 6.

Also on the program is Martha Graham Company member, James Pierce. Pierce will perform Trois Gymnopedies. This work was choreographed by Keith Lee in tribute to Alvin Ailey. Lee was one of the first black dancers to perform with American Ballet Theatre.

Internationally acclaimed choreographer Christopher Huggins, a former member of Alvin Ailey, will premiere a new work on the company.

Duane Cyrus will also premiere a new work inspired by his book “Vital Grace: The Black Male Dancer”. Cyrus co-authored this book with New York based photographer Joanne Savio and it features interviews with Geoffrey Holder, Bill T. Jones, and the late Gregory Hines.

Greensboro—Then & Now

Cyrus Art Production celebrates the City of Greensboro's 200th anniversary! Funded in part by a grant from the Greensboro Bicentennial Commission, Cyrus Art Production’s Greensboro—Then & Now is a multimedia dance theater performance highlighting the momentous contributions made by "The Greensboro Four." Set in the 1960s during the first days of the Woolworth Sit-Ins, the work illustrates how the solidarity of community helped to propel Greensboro’s past into the present, and continues to urge social change toward the future.

This historically-inspired performance work is coupled with one or two week residency and educational outreach component where participants will learn about vital professional and creative skills that can foster positive and progressive change in our community and beyond; Greensboro—Then & Now is suitable for schools, community centers, and all age groups. Bookings for presentations and residencies are now being accepted.

Cyrus Art Production premieres a new collaborative dance theater work commissioned for the Triad’s Bricolage Arts Festival. Funded in part by a grant from the Bricolage Arts Festival, FLOW is a celebration of the fluid and ever-changing ways we connect to each other - the fluidity with which we can change ourselves and the "face" we present to the world, the persistent intangibility of memory and the cleansing joy found in being a member of a community. FLOW is a collaborative exploration of these ideas, through movement, theatre, and visual art. It is a journey that will take the viewer inside a world created by the artists where, perhaps, a new perspective can be found. This work was made in collaboration with Painter/Sculptor Virginia Shepley of Winston-Salem.
